  9.      fig2dev - translates Fig code to various graphics languages

  17. DESCRIPTION
  18.      Fig2dev translates fig code in the named fig-file  into  the
  19.      specified  graphics  language and puts them in out-file. The
  20.      default fig-file and out-file are standard input  and  stan-
  21.      dard output, respectively
  22.  
  23.      Fig (Facility for Interactive Generation of  figures)  is  a
  24.      screen-oriented tool which allows the user to draw and mani-
  25.      pulate objects interactively.  Various versions of  Fig  run
  26.      under the Suntools/Sunview window environment and under ver-
  27.      sion 11 of the X Windows System.  Fig2dev is compatible with
  28.      Fig versions 1.3, 1.4, 2.0, and 2.1.

  31. OPTIONS
  32.      -L    Set the output graphics language.  Valid languages are
  33.           box,  epic,  eepic,  eepicemu, ibmgl, latex, null, pic,
  34.           pictex, ps, pstex, pstex_t,textyl, and tpic.
  35.  
  36.      -m    Set the magnification at which the figure is  rendered
  37.           to mag. The default is 1.0.
  38.  
  39.      -f    Set the default font used for text  objects  to  font.
  40.           The default is Roman; the format of this option depends
  41.           on  the  graphics  language  in  use.    In   TeX-based
  42.           languages,  the  font  is the base of the name given in
  43.           lfonts.tex, for instance In PostScript, it is any  font
  44.           name known to the printer or interpreter.
  45.  
  46.      -s    Set the default font size (in points) for text objects
  47.           to  fsize. The default is 11*mag, and thus is scaled by
  48.           the -m option.  If there is  no  scaling,  the  default
  49.           font is eleven point Roman."

  51.      -V    Print the program version number only.
  52.

  54.           The other options are specific to the choice of  graph-
  55.           ics language, as described below.

  74.      It  was  developed  by Sunil Podar of Department of Computer
  75.      Science in S.U.N.Y at Stony Brook.
  76.  
  77.      EEPIC is an extension to  EPIC  and  LaTeX  picture  drawing
  78.      environment  which  uses tpic specials as a graphics mechan-
  79.      ism.  It was written by Conrad Kwok of Division of  Computer
  80.      Science at University of California, Davis.
  81.  
  82.      EEPIC-EMU is an EEPIC emulation package which does  not  use
  83.      tpic specials.
  84.  
  85.      -a    Generate alternate font size commands  which  have  an
  86.           initial  capital  letter.  These can be translated into
  87.           latex type size commands by including  the  macro  file
  88.           figfonts.tex.   In  the  resulting  document, type size
  89.           changes apply to text math mode  as  well  as  straight
  90.           text.
  91.  
  92.      -l    Use "\thicklines" when width of the line is wider than
  93.           lwidth. The default is 2.
  94.  
  95.      -v    Include comments in the output file.
  96.  
  97.      -P    Generate a complete LaTeX file. In  other  words,  the
  98.           output  file  can  be  formatted  without requiring any
  99.           changes. The additional text inserted in the  beginning
  100.           and  at the end of the file is controlled by the confi-
  101.           guration parameter "Preamble" and "Postamble".
  102.  
  103.      -S    Set the scale to which the figure is  rendered.   This
  104.           option automatically sets the magnification and size to
  105.           scale / 12 and scale respectively.
  106.  
  107.      -W    Enable variable line width
  108.  
  109.      -w    Disable variable line width. Only "\thicklines" and/or
  110.           "\thinlines"  commands  will be generated in the output
  111.           file.
  112.  
  113.      When variable line width  option  is  enabled,  "\thinlines"
  114.      command  is  still used when line width is less than LineTh-
  115.      ick. One potential problem is that the width of "\thinlines"
  116.      is  0.4pt  but  the  resolution of Fig is 1/80 inch (approx.
  117.      1pt). If LineThick is set to 2, normal lines will  be  drawn
  118.      in  0.4pt wide lines but the next line width is already 2pt.
  119.      One possible solution is to set LineThick to 1 and  set  the
  120.      width  of  the  those  lines you want to be drawn in "\thin-
  121.      lines"  to 0.
  122.  
  123.      Due  to  this  problem,  Variable  line  width  VarWidth  is
  124.      defaulted to be false.

  140. IBM-GL OPTIONS
  141.      IBM-GL (International Business Machines  Graphics  Language)
  142.      is   compatible   with   HP-GL   (Hewlett-Packard   Graphics
  143.      Language).
  144.  
  145.      -a    Select ISO A4 (ANSI A) paper size if  the  default  is
  146.           ANSI A (ISO A4) paper size.
  147.  
  148.      -c    Generate instructions for an IBM  6180  Color  Plotter
  149.           with  (without)  an  IBM Graphics Enhancement Cartridge
  150.           (IBM-GEC).
  151.  
  152.      -d    Restrict plotting to a rectangular area of the plotter
  153.           paper  which  has a lower left hand corner at (xll,yll)
  154.           and a upper right hand corner at  (xur,yur).  All  four
  155.           numbers are in inches and follow -d in a comma-sparated
  156.           list - xll,yll,xur,yur - with no spaces between them.

  158.      -f    Load text character specifications from the  table  in
  159.           the  fonts  file.  The table must have 36 entries - one
  160.           for each font plus a default.  Each entry consists of 5
  161.           numbers which specify the 1.) standard character set (0
  162.           - 4, 6 - 9, 30 - 39), 2.) alternate character set (0  -
  163.           4,  6  -  9,  30  -  39),  3.)  character  slant  angle
  164.           (degrees), 4.) character width  scale  factor  and  5.)
  165.           character height scale factor.
  166.  
  167.      -l    Load area fill line patterns from  the  table  in  the
  168.           patterns  file.   The  table must have 21 entries - one
  169.           for each of the area fill patterns.   Each  entry  con-
  170.           sists of 5 numbers which specify the 1.) pattern number
  171.           (-1 - 6), 2.) pattern length (inches), 3.) fill type (1
  172.           -  5),  4.)  fill  spacing  (inches) and 5.) fill angle
  173.           (degrees).

  175.      -m    The magnification may appear as the first element in a
  176.           comma sepatated list - mag,x0,y0 - where the second and
  177.           third parameters specify an offset in inches.
  178.  
  179.      -p    Load plotter pen specifications from the table in  the
  180.           pens  file.   The  table  must have 9 entries - one for
  181.           each color plus a default.  Each entry  consists  of  2
  182.           numbers  which  specify  the 1.) pen number (1 - 8) and
  183.           2.) pen thickness (millimeters).

  185.      -P    Rotate the figure to portrait  mode.  The  default  is
  186.           landscape mode.
  187.  
  188.      -S    Set the pen speed to speed (centimeters/second).
  189.  
  190.      -v    Plot the figure upside-down in portrait mode or  back-
  191.           wards  in  landscape mode.  This allows you to write on
  192.

  207.           turbing the plotter ink on the bottom surface.
  208.  
  209.      Fig2dev may be installed  with  either  ANSI  A  or  ISO  A4
  210.      default  paper  size.   The  -a option selects the alternate
  211.      paper size.  Fig2dev does  not  fill  closed  splines.   The
  212.      IBM-GEC  is required to fill other polygons.  Fig2dev may be
  213.      installed for plotters with or without the IBM-GEC.  The  -c
  214.      option selects the alternate instruction set.

  217. LATEX OPTIONS
  218.      -a    Generate alternate  font  size  commands  -  see  epic
  219.           options.
  220.  
  221.      -l    Sets the threshold between LaTeX thin and thick  lines
  222.           to  lwidth  pixels.   LaTeX supports only two different
  223.           line width: \thinlines and \thicklines.  Lines of width
  224.           greater  than  lwidth  pixels are drawn as \thicklines.
  225.           Also affects the size of dots  in  dotted  line  style.
  226.           The default is 0.
  227.  
  228.      -d    Set a separate magnification for the  length  of  line
  229.           dashes to dmag.
  230.  
  231.      -v    Verbose mode.
  232.  
  233.      LaTeX cannot accurately represent all the  graphics  objects
  234.      which  can  be  described by Fig.  For example, the possible
  235.      slopes which lines may have are limited.  Some objects, such
  236.      as spline curves, cannot be drawn at all.  Fig2latex chooses
  237.      the closest possible line slope, and prints  error  messages
  238.      when objects cannot be drawn accurately
  239.  
  240.  
  241. PIC OPTIONS
  242.      -a    Generate alternate  font  size  commands  -  see  epic
  243.           options.
  244.  
  245.      -p   Enables the use of certain  PIC  extensions  which  are
  246.           known  to  work  with  the groff package; compatibility
  247.           with DWB PIC is unknown.   The  extensions  enabled  by
  248.           each option are:
  249.  
  250.      arc  Allow ARC_BOX i.e. use rounded corners
  251.  
  252.      line Use the 'line_thickness' value
  253.  
  254.      fill Allow ellipses to be filled
  255.  
  256.      all  Use all of the above

  272. PICTEX OUTPUT
  273.      In order to include PiCTeX pictures into a document,  it  is
  274.      necessary to load the PiCTeX macros.
  275.  
  276.      PiCTeX uses TeX  integer  register  arithmetic  to  generate
  277.      curves,  and  so  it  is  very slow.  PiCTeX draws curves by
  278.      \put-ing the psymbol repeatedly, and  so  requires  a  large
  279.      amount  of  TeX's  internal  memory, and generates large DVI
  280.      files.  The size of TeX's memory limits the number  of  plot
  281.      symbols in a picture.  As a result, it is best to use PiCTeX
  282.      to generate small pictures.
  283.  
  284.  
  285. POSTSCRIPT OPTIONS
  286.      With PostScript, Fig can be used to  create  large  posters.
  287.      The  figure will be created by printing multiple pages which
  288.      can be glued together.  Due to memory  limitations  of  most
  289.      laser  printers,  the  figure should not be too complicated.
  290.      Great for text with very big letters.
  291.  
  292.      Text can now include various ISO-character codes above 0x7f,
  293.      which  is  useful  for  language  specific  characters to be
  294.      printed directly.  Not all ISO-characters are implemented.
  295.  
  296.      Color support: Colored objects created by Fig can be printed
  297.      on  a  color postscript printer. Currently 8 colors are sup-
  298.      ported: black, blue,  green,  cyan,  red,  magenta,  yellow,
  299.      white.   On  a  monochrome  printer, colored objects will be
  300.      mapped  into  different  grayscales.   Filled  objects   are
  301.      printed  using the given grayscale. If filled with grayscale
  302.      set to 100%, the object will be filled with the  same  color
  303.      as the enclosing line.
  304.  
  305.      -a    Generate alternate  font  size  commands  -  see  epic
  306.           options.
  307.  
  308.      -c   option centers the figure on the page.   The  centering
  309.           may  not be accurate if there are texts in the fig_file
  310.           that extends too far to the right of other objects.
  311.  
  312.      -l dummy_arg
  313.           Rotate figure to landscape mode.  The dummy argument is
  314.           ignored,  but  must appear on the command line for rea-
  315.           sons of compatibility.
  316.  
  317.      -P   indicates that the figure describes a full  page  which
  318.           will  not  necessarily be inserted into a document, but
  319.           can be sent directly to a  PS  printer.   This  ensures
  320.           that  a  showpage command is inserted at the end of the
  321.           figure, and inhibits translation of the figure  coordi-
  322.           nate system.

  338. PSTEX OPTIONS
  339.      The  pstex language is a variant of ps which suppresses for-
  340.           matted  (special)  text.   The pstex_t language has the
  341.           complementary behavior: it generates  only  LaTeX  com-
  342.           mands  necessary to position special text, and to over-
  343.           lay the PostScript file generated  using  pstex.  These
  344.           two drivers can be used to generate a figure which com-
  345.           bines the flexibility of PostScript graphics with LaTeX
  346.           text formatting of special text.
  347.  
  348.      The  pstex_t option  -p  file  specifies  the  name  of  the
  349.           PostScript  file  to  be  overlaid.   If not set or its
  350.           value is null then no PS file will be inserted.
  351.  
  352. TEXTYL OPTIONS
  353.      There are no TeXtyl-specific options.
